Sajama
National Park
Sajama National
Park, Ranging beyond 3,900 meters above sea level, the Bolivian
Altiplano hosts several snow peaks, which belong to a chain of active
volcanoes. The powerful mythic Caranga culture possessed señoríos
(kingdoms) in this region long before the Incas and Spanish. Sajama
Volcano is the highest peak in Bolivia, at 6,437. The harsh alpine landscape
is striking and beautiful from sunrise to sunset. Extensive pasturelands
are home to llamas, alpacas and vicuñas and many species of Altiplano
and Andean birds such as the threatened Andean Rhea, three species of
flamingos, eagles and hawks, and Andean Flickers. Historical attractions
include Pre-Inca chullpas (burial tombs) and several small churches
built during the 17th century by Spanish. Today local residents preserve
a rich mix of traditional customs intertwined with Pre-Inca and colonial
influences, infusing Sajama´s atmosphere with a sense of sacred,
enduring qualities. Day 1 - La Paz
