In
Argentina, bordered by Chile, Bolivia, and Paraguay, at 1,187
meters over the sea level, stands Salta. Its name comes
from "aimar" (a regional language) and it has many meanings
such as: "sallata" (rock place); "sita" (resting
place) and "sagta" (very beautiful). This strategic
point in the north of Argentina, has a mild and dry climate which
allows the growth of a great variety of crops. Its wonderful geography
lets you enjoy different types of tourism. Its population, estimated
in over 800,000 inhabitants, has peculiar features, among which
hospitality and cordiality have to be remarked. Owner of a wide
and deep history, a characteristic culture, and a capacity and
strength to go forward in the present times, Salta does not stop
searching for new horizons in its provincial growth. During recent
years, one of the windows from Salta to the world has been the
Train to the Clouds, with its unbelievable trip, full of emotions,
up to the viaduct "La Polvorilla", 4,200 meters over
the sea level. Today, we invite you to know more about this province.
Day 1
Arrival in Salta, meeting at the airport.
Motorcoach - Salta / Cachi / Ruinas de Quilmes
This is the traditional trip to the Calchaquíes Valleys.
We also include a visit to the Quilmes Ruins, in the province
of Tucumán. We start at the city of Salta and cross the
Lerma Valley to get to the Escoipe Canyon and the Cuesta del Obispo.
On the Tin-Tin straight we travel through the National Park of
the Cardones to reach the old village of Cachi, placed at the
foot of the Nevado de Cachi (6,000 m). On a picturesque little
road we skirt the fertile valleys of the Calchaquíes River

Calchaquíes River through little villages such as Molinos,
Angastaco and San Carlos, and later we cross the impressive Arrow´s
Canyon (Quebrada de las Flechas). We spend the night at a fascinating
hotel at the foot of the ruins. Lunch and dinner are included.

Motorcoach - Ruinas De Quilmes / Cafayate / Salta
Departure
to Cafayate, a beautiful colonial village located in the very
heart of the Calchaquies Valleys. Drive along route 68 passing
through Cerrillos, El Carril a typical village at the Lerma River
valley, Ampascachi, Talapampa, Alemania and the Las Conchas River
Gorge with its extraordinary formations on the rocks eroded by
the wind and time. Surrounded by rivers and vineyards stands Cafayate.
See the colonial style houses, the main square, the Parish Church
and the Town Hall. Visit a famous wine bodega to sample some of
Argentina finest wines. Later on to the Calchaqui Colonial and
Archeological Museum. Return to Salta. Lunch and dinner are included.

Train - Salta / San Antonio de los Cobres
Motorcoach - San Antonio de Los Cobres / Tilcara
Train To the Clouds, Humahuaca and Pumamarca (2 Days) (does
not operate daily) In addition to the beautiful landscape on the
way to San Antonio de Los Cobres, this train ride is one of the
three highest railroads in the world. It seems to be hanging from
the giddy mountains, the visitor feels as if he were hanging from
the clouds and it runs across some of the region's most spectacular
scenery, like the amazing landscape with its high peaks. During
the season that goes from April to October the train leaves the
city of Salta on Saturdays and other special scheduled departures.
Along its zigzagged trip of 217 km. The train passes by San Antonio
de Los Cobres and climb almost 4,200 meters above sea level when
it gets to La Polvorilla Viaduct. During the journey this train
provides a buffet-car, a medical ward, audio sound, video, folk
groups, and bilingual tourist guides. Due to its magnificent landscape,
the translucent clarity of the intense blue of the sky, and because
over the years "Train to the Clouds" has become one
of the most important railroads built the first half of this century,
it is one of the most important tourist attractions in Argentina.

4
Breakfast at your hotel.
Motorcoach - Tilcara / Humahuaca / Pumamarca / Salta airport
Morning departure to the Pucara (a fortified pre-Columbian
settlement) and the Archaeological Museum. Then on to Huacalera
and Uquia to see one of the oldest colonial churches in the Northwest.
Arrive at Humahuaca, founded in the XVl century at the
Grande River bank, it has been strongly influenced by the Inca
culture. Walk through its narrow cobblestone streets with its
sun dried clay bricks houses. See its Cathedral, Town Hall, the
Northern Carnival Museum, and the craft fair. On our way back
to Salta visit of San Salvador de Jujuy to see its main landmarks:
San Francisco Church, San Bernardo Convent, the Cathedral, etc.
On the way to Salta visit Purmamarca, a colonial village surrounded
by the picturesque Seven Colors Hill. Lunch en route.
